Rievaulx Abbey
A subtle interpretation of one of the major Cistercian abbeys of North Yorkshire. Founded by St Bernard of Clairvaux and just 12 monks, the abbey became one of the most important monasteries in medieval England. Set in the peaceful Rye Valley (Rievaulx) this English Heritage site enjoys "a marvellous freedom from the tumult of the world" as described by its third abbot St Aelred.
